Sigurður Grétar Bogason
CEO of MarkMar
Sigurdur G. Bogason received his PhD in Food Science and Technology from Oregon State University, USA, in 1984. He is the CEO of MarkMar Ltd from 2006, a SME research company specialized in the EU Research Framework funding mechanism, and project management of European Commission funded RTD projects. He is also the leader of the ASCS – Applied Supply Chain Systems research group at the School of Engineering and Natural Sciences, University of Iceland, and is supervisor and evaluator of graduate students.
He was head of international research at Icelandic fisheries laboratories 2005 to 2006, and from 2000 to 2004 he worked as a Scientific Officer for the European Commission, DG FISH.
Prior to moving to Brussels, he was working as Development Manager for the large seafood export organizations and groups; SIF Union, Icelandic Freezing Plants Corporation, and SIF Group Ltd. With more than 30 years’ experience in the seafood sector spanning industry and academic research and including a period of two years in Africa, where he was appointed as the first Managing Director and CEO of FISHCOR LTD and the Seaflower Ltd. subsidiaries in Namibia, responsible for launching its operations starting in 1993.
In recent years, he has focused more on the larger perspective of food supply chain systems, and the attached values incorporated in the information attached to particular products and processes. Values like e.g. sustainable sourcing, animal welfare, labelling schemes, food chain transparency and information needed to assure consumers about the integrity of the food supply systems, and their right to know and understand the product, its origin, its processing history, its logistics, and why their purchasing will benefit them as consumers, and the environment. He is currently coordinates the VALUMICS H2020 EU funded project (www.valumics.eu), and is leading the work package on stakeholder outreach and co-creation in the SUCCESS H2020 project (http://www.success-h2020.eu/ )
