Global Sustainable Seafood Initiative (GSSI)

Herman Wisse is the Program Director of the Global Sustainable Seafood Initiative (GSSI). GSSI is a foundation under Dutch law with the mission of GSSI is to deliver a common, consistent and global benchmarking tool for seafood certification schemes to ensure confidence in the supply and promotion of sustainable seafood to consumers worldwide as well as promote improvement in the schemes.

Prior to this Herman worked as a consultant to the GSSI where his responsibilities included the development of a detailed project proposal for the foundation of the GSSI, and facilitate liaison with parties interested in becoming involved with the GSSI. For FAO he worked as the lead consultant for the development of an Evaluation Framework against the FAO Technical Guidelines for Aquaculture.

Herman graduated with distinction from his MSc degree in Aquaculture and Marine Resource Management at Wageningen University in 2012. For his dissertation Herman benchmarked the governance of seafood eco-labelling schemes against the requirements of the FAO Guidelines, while working as a consultant for Royal Ahold.

Global Sustainable Seafood Initiative (GSSI), a non-competitive approach to building confidence in certified seafood


Market based measures, such as credible third party certification schemes provide effective incentives for the sustainable use of marine resources and directly contribute to the achievement of sustainable seafood consumption. Fast proliferation in certification schemes has led to confusion among users on how to recognize truly credible schemes. The Global Sustainable Seafood Initiative (GSSI) created the first ever Global Benchmark Tool that recognizes credible schemes that meet the FAO Ecolabelling and Certification Guidelines and the Code of Conduct for Responsible Fisheries. Its unique collaborative partnership involves actors from the entire seafood value chain and provides a powerful platform to drive change. Supported by over 40 organizations, GSSI is effectively promoting improvement in global seafood certification. The tool has seen strong support with many certification schemes signing up to be benchmarked. Between July and December 2016 schemes such as The Alaskan RFM Program, the Icelandic RFM and most recently MSC are all GSSI endorsed. More programs are entering the benchmark process as food service companies and retailers like Ahold Delhaize, Wal-Mart, Metro Group, Morrissons, Sodexo, Publix and Kroger expect GSSI recognition to become the norm when sourcing certified seafood.
