National certification of sustainable fisheries
In 2008 a certification programme was launched in Iceland with full support of the Icelandic fishing industry and Icelandic au thorities. The Iceland Responsible Fisheries Management Certification Programme is a national programme, certifying Icelandic fisheries within the Icelandic EEZ and shared stocks fished by Icelandic vessels subject to Icelandic fisheries management. The programme which has its own certification mark, is FAO based with third party certification. Being national certification programme its objects are of significance and have important value not only to document well managed Icelandic fisheries to the highest level of assurance but also to promote community consensus behind good discipline in fisheries management.
